New Long-Term Monitoring Program for the Lower Esopus Creek

June 2026 - Sampling has begun! A team from the Lower Esopus Creek community, Manhattan University, and Hudsonia Ltd have launched a long-term stream monitoring program for the Lower Esopus Creek in Ulster Co, NY. This study will help provide data on the health of the stream to inform restoration and protection of the Lower Esopus Creek and watershed. We want to understand and manage the relationship between influencing factors, and work with the residents of the Lower Esopus Creek region to continue to observe, understand and manage their watershed beyond the duration of the grant.

The funding for this grant became available as a result of the Order on Consent No. D007-0001-11 – Lower Esopus Stream Management. The consent is an agreement between New York City and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation concerning management of turbidity and environmental impacts in the Lower Esopus Creek watershed associated with releases from the Ashokan Reservoir. The order established requirements for developing and implementing the Lower Esopus Stream Management Plan, funding environmental benefit projects, and coordinating long-term water quality, habitat, and flood management efforts. The Hudson River Foundation is the order of consent administrator.
